Jalandhar April 7 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- The Department of Psychology of Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar observed World Autism Day. The Resource Person of the day was Ms. Prachika Chopra, Career Counselor and also proud alumna of ACFA.

Ms. Chopra enlightened the audience about the possible reasons of Autism, which makes the person suffering from it to communicate and interact in efficient manner. She said that sometimes it occurs because of hereditary reasons and sometimes if the expecting mother takes medication for depression, alcohol or drugs; that also leads to this mental problem. Adding to this, she put forth that hypertension and thyroid in the mother too can be one of the reasons for it.

Talking about the possible solutions of this problem, she said that the parents should observe the behaviour of their children precisely, especially for first 4 years. They should notice their eating patterns and habits, and should observe if they make eye contact while interacting. If any of such symptoms are there, they should immediately consult child therapist, speech therapist or counselor.

Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra put forth that in today’s time it is essential to take care of our mental health as well along with physical health. Today’s children should be aware about the mental problems and their possible solutions. Talking of Autism, she added if the children suffering from Autism are not dealt with special care at proper time, they had to suffer the consequences of it for a larger portion of their lives. So the role of Counselors play an important role when it comes to Autism. She congratulated Ms. Monika Sekhon and Dr. Monika Bahri from Department of Psychology for successfully organising the event and enlightening students about Autism.
