Jalandhar December 4 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- S. Balbir Singh was such a wonderful personality, who devoted his whole life for the betterment in the fields of social welfare and education. He was voice of people as member of Parliament and even as a cabinet minister in Govt. of Punjab. With his futuristic vision, he made significant contributions in the field of education. One of is important contributions was making Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar as one of the premiere institutes of North India. S. Balbir Singh was an unparalleled personality with virtues of an able educationist, scholar, competent politician, efficient administrator and above all a true humanitarian. He revolutionized the educational set up of the region during his 35 year tenure as the President of the Governing Council of Lyallpur Khalsa College. It was his thought process that paved the path for LKC to achieve new heights and thus becoming today’s premiere center of education. S. Balbir Singh was the first educationist to realize the importance and potential of Computer Science and IT and successfully introduced these profession centered course in the institute. He not only set up new LKC institutes in the region but also created conducieve environment in terms of attaining all round development of its students. He ensured student participation in sports, cultural and co-curricular activities in addition to the academics.
S. Balbir Singh was a seasoned politician. He constructively influenced politics of Punjab as well as of India. He was health and family welfare minister in Giani Zail Singh’s govt. of Punjab from 1972-77.
During his tenure, he initiated many new schemes for the benefit of the masses. He knew that health and education play essential role in state welfare and nation development. Therefore, he devoted his life for the betterment of society by focusing in the fields of education and health. After serving his state with such dedication, he then stepped up to the national level with his Rajya Sabha membership from 1992-1998 and his emphatic selection to Lok Sabha in 1999 up to 2004. During this time, he started many schemes for social welfare from MP Land fund for the people of Punjab.
Dedication, fearlessness, hard work, commitment and non-alignment were in the blood of S. Balbir Singh. He would not rest until the tasks taken by him were not completed. Besides, being an educationist, he remained chairman of college managements. He used this platform to raise problems of colleges. Moreover, with the aid of government, he started many schemes for the welfare of students. His entire life and way of living were inspiration for others to follow. He successfully launched LK Institutions imparting quality education in the fields of Law, Education and Technical Education through a collegiate school, Degree college and B.ED college among others.
Under the visionary guidance and endeavors of S.Balbir Singh, LKC is now an established name in North India. College has received ‘Potential of Excellence’ Award from UGC. S. Balbir Singh contributed heavily in the field of sports. His contribution in sports has been so motivating that LKC has won GNDU’s Teja Singh Samundri Trophy for record 24 times.
Further, he emphasized on students’ participation in cultural and folk art. This has resulted in 3 Zonal and 2 Inter Zonal trophies in GNDU Youth festivals.
5 December marks the birth anniversary of S. Balbir Singh. College organizes its Annual Alumni Meet on the same day every year to remember and rejoice the tremendous contribution of its former president, leader and most celebrated former student, S. Balbir Singh. Keeping up this tradition, on 5th Dec.2021 a multifaceted program will be organized. All the former students of the college are warmly invited to be part of this momentous occasion.
