
Jalandhar March 2 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous) organized a workshop on genetic counseling, and its clinical and diagnostic aspects. The workshop was organized by Department of Biotechnology for students to enhance their knowledge about different aspects related to genetic counseling, its importance in current era, and global demands of genetic counselors. Ms. Deepti Chaudhary, Genetic Counselor, Life Cell International Ltd., North Zone, India was the resource person for the workshop.
This student growth and development oriented activity was intended to improve their cognitive intellectual skills and knowledge on genetic counseling, need of genetic counseling, and present and future career opportunities in this field, and different multidisciplinary areas of science that are not only emerging with genetic counseling, but are deeply involved in it.Ms. Deepti Chaudhary commenced her lecture with the elaboration of human cell, nucleus, chromosome and DNA, then a deep illustration on genetic disorders, autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant disorders, epigenetic and gene pool studies in different Indian communities.

The workshop was highly interactive, from the start till the end, and students were continuously asking the queries to the resource person as she was displaying and explaining case studies, her experiences in this field, and different medico-legal ethics involved in genetic counseling. Moreover, the role of a genetic counselor, dealing with patients, and need of remaining sympathetic in this profession was explained by her in an elaborative manner. Students were showing deep enthusiasm and were interacting with the guest speaker throughout the workshop.
At the end of the event, three students from Department of Bio-Technology performed a 20 minute long role-play info-entertainment activity that was meant to summarize the content of complete genetic counseling workshop in an easily understandable manner.
Principal Prof. Dr. Atima Sharma Dwivedi appreciated all the students for their enthusiastic participation also lauded the innovative and holistic student’s cognitive learning and skill development programs organized by the Department of Bio-Technology, from time to time. She averred that this workshop was not only an intellectual skill development activity, but was also a student’s overall growth centric developmental activity.
